Mary is a heartwarming drama that follows the life of a talented American opera singer named Mary (Juliette Binoche). The story is set in the present day, following Mary as she reluctantly returns to her hometown in South Carolina after decades away. Mary's return to her hometown is bittersweet. Although she left behind a past filled with pain, she also reunites with her old flame James (Matthew Modine) and her estranged family, including her father Frank (Forest Whitaker). While trying to reconnect with her roots, Mary is haunted by her past and the secrets she has tried to keep hidden for so long.

The plot is driven by Mary's desire to reconnect with her teenage daughter Grace (Heather Graham), whom she gave up for adoption when she was a young, struggling artist. After reuniting with James, Mary discovers that Grace is now a successful writer living in New York City. Mary decides to track down Grace and make amends for abandoning her all those years ago.

As Mary embarks on a journey to reconnect with Grace, she must confront the demons of her past and come to terms with the choices she has made. Throughout the film, Mary's character is explored in depth as she comes to understand the importance of family, forgiveness, and self-acceptance.

The film is beautifully shot, highlighting the contrast between the bustling city life of New York and the simple, serene beauty of South Carolina. The music in the film is also noteworthy, showcasing Mary's stunning voice and love for opera.

Overall, Mary is a touching and poignant drama that explores the complexities of family relationships, loss, and redemption. The performances of the lead actors are exceptional, particularly Juliette Binoche's portrayal of the conflicted and talented Mary. The film's exploration of the power of forgiveness and the importance of realizing one's own faults and limitations is deeply moving and thought-provoking.
