Mausam is a 1975 Indian romantic drama film directed by Gulzar, starring Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, and Om Shivpuri in the lead roles. The movie revolves around a love story between a young man and a girl, set across different seasons or 'mausam' in Hindi. The film was well received by audiences and critics alike for the impeccable acting prowess of the lead pair, the soulful music score, and the visually stunning cinematography.

The story begins with Dr. Amarnath Gill (Sanjeev Kumar), a doctor in a small hill station in Himachal Pradesh, meeting with Chanda (Sharmila Tagore), a young girl who visits the locality with her mother. The two strike a bond, and despite the difference in their socio-economic statuses, they fall for each other. However, before they could confess their love, Chanda and her mother have to leave the place due to unforeseen circumstances.

The movie then follows Amarnath and Chanda's lives as they cross paths with each other, under different circumstances with time. From being separated by fate and circumstances, to reuniting years later and then facing new trials, Mausam beautifully portrays the fluctuating stages of a relationship.

Their first meeting was in summer, 'greeshma ritu', depicted by vibrant colours and playful exchanges. They next met in autumn, 'sharad ritu', when love was in full bloom and the setting was marked by the colour orange. Winter followed, with 'hemant ritu', setting the mood in melancholy, showing them separated for a long time. The story continued through the season of spring, 'vasanta ritu', when they found each other again, but life is not easy, and more hardships await them.

Sanjeev Kumar's performance as the reserved and somewhat brooding Amarnath was well noted by critics, and he was praised for his restrained portrayal of a man who struggles to come to terms with his emotions. Sharmila Tagore as Chanda was exceptional. Her vivacious personality was infectious, and it was easy to understand why Amarnath was smitten. Together, they brought out the best in each other and delivered some memorable scenes.

The film's music was by renowned composer Madan Mohan, with lyrics by Gulzar. The song "Dil Dhoondta Hai" is a classic, and won hearts with its poignant lyrics and soulful composition. Also, "Mere Ishq Mein" remained a memorable song of the movie till date, and the list goes on. The background score by Salil Choudhury helped in setting up the perfect mood for each season.

The cinematography by K.K. Mahajan was striking, capturing the beauty of nature, and the vivid colours of each season. The vivid, lush green mountains in summer, the warm oranges and yellows of autumn, the snow-laden fields in winter and the blooming flowers in spring- all were stunningly captured on screen. Gulzar's direction was top-notch, and he navigated the intricacies of the story with ease, bringing out the best in his actors, and giving audiences an emotional experience that would remain fresh in their memories for long.

Overall, Mausam was a film that transcended time. It was a love story that was at once, simple and nuanced. It was a portrayal of pure and innocent love- love that is everlasting and can survive the test of time. Mausam, a classic masterpiece from the 70s, is a movie that will remain in the hearts of movie lovers for generations to come.
