Metropia is a 2009 Swedish-Danish-Norwegian animated science fiction film directed by Tarik Saleh. Set in a dystopian future Europe, the movie follows the story of a young man named Roger, voiced by Vincent Gallo, who becomes embroiled in a vast conspiracy unfolding beneath the surface of society. The movie takes place in a monochromatic world marked by endless rain and towering megacities connected by a vast network of subway tunnels. Roger is a low-paid drone working as a call center employee, spending his days in mind-numbing routine. However, he soon begins to experience strange, unexplainable visions that are driving him towards the brink of a nervous breakdown.

Roger's life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a young woman named Nina, voiced by Juliette Lewis, who warns him of a vast conspiracy involving the world's largest shampoo company. Nina is a political activist fighting against the megacorporations that have taken over the world, and she sees in Roger the potential to unlock the secrets of an arcane puzzle that could expose the truth.

As Roger delves deeper into the conspiracy, he discovers that the shampoo company has developed a secret technology that can surveil and control human minds. This technology, known as "Dangst," is being used to manipulate the masses and maintain control over society, and Roger finds himself caught in a web of intrigue and danger.

Along the way, Roger meets a variety of colorful characters, including the enigmatic and slightly sinister P, voiced by Udo Kier, who may hold the key to unraveling the conspiracy. P is a shadowy figure who seems to exist outside of time, and Roger is never quite sure whether he can trust him or not.

Throughout the course of the film, Roger must confront his deepest fears and doubts, as he battles against the forces of corruption and deception that threaten to engulf him. The movie is a tense and atmospheric thriller that combines elements of science fiction, conspiracy theory, and political commentary, creating a thought-provoking and visually striking cinematic experience.

The animation in Metropia is unique and highly stylized, featuring a combination of computer-generated imagery and live-action footage that gives the film a distinctive look and feel. The rain-drenched megacities are rendered in stark shades of gray, with occasional bursts of neon color adding a touch of vibrancy to the otherwise bleak landscape.

The voice acting in Metropia is top-notch, with Vincent Gallo giving a nuanced and engaging performance as the troubled protagonist, and Juliette Lewis bringing a sense of passion and intensity to her role as the activist Nina. Udo Kier is also excellent as the enigmatic P, infusing his character with a sense of mystery and danger.

Overall, Metropia is a highly original and ambitious film that deftly combines elements of genre cinema with a critique of contemporary social and political issues. It is a compelling and thought-provoking work that will leave viewers thinking long after the end credits have rolled.

Metropia is a 2009 animated movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 26 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 47.
