Mickybo and Me is a 2004 drama film set in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The movie follows the story of two young boys, Mickybo and Joey, who meet in the summer of 1970. Both boys come from completely different backgrounds, with Mickybo growing up in a Protestant family and Joey growing up in a Catholic family. Despite this, the two boys form an unlikely friendship based on their shared love of the film Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. They both dream of becoming just like their heroes from the movie.

As their friendship grows stronger, the two boys begin to escape their troubled lives by acting out scenes from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. They go so far as to run away from home in an attempt to recreate the movie's famous bicycle scene. They venture into each other's territories, attending opposite parades and visiting local spots that are taboo for their respective communities.

Along the way, the boys meet various other characters, including a kindly shopkeeper who looks out for them, and the local bully who becomes their nemesis. Julie Walters plays Joey's mother, who is struggling to keep her son on the right path and protect him from the dangers of the ongoing conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the area. She is a source of warmth and love in the boy's tumultuous lives.

The film's strong performances from both John Joesph Mcneill, who plays Mickybo, and Niall Wright, who plays Joey, create a remarkable bond between the two young characters. Their friendship is so pure and innocent that it reminds us that growing up too quickly takes away our youth and optimism. This film is a testament to the power of innocence and friendship even in the midst of struggles, social division, and conflict.

Mickybo and Me is brilliantly directed by Terry Loane, who manages to capture the emotional depth and complexity of the story in the scenes both large and small. The film superbly balances the heart wrenching realities of life, and the joy of childhood friendship.

The movie deals with many complex subjects that permeate the fabric of Northern Ireland, such as the political divisions and the lasting scars of The Troubles. The film does not shy away from representing the reality of the conflict, but rather puts it into a broader human context by using the boys' friendship to highlight the similarities and differences between people.

Overall, Mickybo and Me is a coming of age story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. It eloquently speaks of the human condition and reminds us of the importance of friendship during the difficult times of life. This movie is a testament to the power of mixed communities in a divided society, to live together in harmony irrespective of their religious identities. Mickybo and Me is a deeply moving story that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
