Mithya is a 2008 Indian crime thriller film directed by Rajat Kapoor. The film stars Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, and Naseeruddin Shah in pivotal roles. Mithya is the story of a struggling Mumbai-based actor, VK. The film centers around his life, the struggles he faces, and the decisions he makes to survive in the underworld. The plot begins with VK attending an audition, where he is teased and ridiculed by fellow actors for his acting skills. Disheartened, he decides to go home but is abducted by some local goons who mistake him for a drug lord named Raje. Initially, VK is scared for his life, but he realizes that he can use this opportunity to turn his life around.

VK's life takes a drastic turn as he is introduced to the criminal underworld. Raje's right-hand man, Shetty, welcomes him into the fold and teaches him the rules of the trade. VK quickly learns the ropes and starts to climb the ladder. He meets several characters who transform his life and outlook for the better. He befriends a guy named Lucky, who is a driver for a local don, Musa Bhai. Lucky guides him on how to survive in the underworld.

The story takes an interesting turn when VK falls in love with a bar dancer named Sonam. Neha Dhupia, who plays Sonam's character, adds a new dimension to the story with her excellent performance. VK finds himself struggling to keep his new lifestyle a secret from her which he fails to do so in the end.

Naseeruddin Shah, who plays the role of Musa Bhai is brilliant in his role. He is a ruthless don, but his demeanor exudes an aura of calm and control. Musa Bhai and VK's paths collide when VK finds out that Musa Bhai is about to deal with a rival gang. VK's loyalty is put to test, and he must make a decision even though he is aware of the potentially life-changing consequences.

The film's pacing is slow and steady, with a deliberately jarring end. Mithya's storytelling is unique, emphasizing realistic character development over a convoluted plot. The screenplay by Saurabh Shukla and Rajat Kapoor is excellent and has many layers to it. The dialogues are witty and add to the overall ambiance of the film.

The cinematography by Rafey Mehmood is beautiful, with several scenes shot in the city of Mumbai. The film's soundtrack by Sagar Desai is impressive, with the background score significantly contributing to the film's overall tone.

In summary, Mithya is an excellent film that is entertaining, thought-provoking, and engaging. Kapoor's direction and the performances by the cast are brilliant, delivering a film worth watching multiple times. It is an authentic representation of the Mumbai underworld, which is often portrayed in films with overt sensationalism. Overall, Mithya is an exceptional film that is a must-see for anyone looking for a well-made crime thriller.
