Moliere is a French-language film released in 2007 directed by Laurent Tirard. Romain Duris plays the titular role of the famous playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known by his stage name Moliere. The film is a fictionalized account of Moliere's life, taking place in the year 1658. The movie begins with Moliere in debt, unable to pay his actors and struggling to find success with his plays. He is forced to flee Paris after being imprisoned for unpaid debts, and he and a small group of actors travel the countryside performing shows for small towns. On one such occasion, Moliere is approached by a wealthy merchant named Jourdain, played by Fabrice Luchini, who invites him to his estate to entertain guests.

Jourdain is a pretentious, self-important man who fancies himself a patron of the arts. He believes himself to be a brilliant writer and musician, despite having no talent in either of those areas. He hires Moliere to give him private acting lessons so that he can impress a beautiful widow named Celimene, played by Laura Morante, who he is in love with.

Moliere reluctantly agrees to take on the job, seeing it as a way to earn some much-needed money. As he spends more time with Jourdain, however, he begins to see the potential for a new play. Jourdain's ridiculous behavior and over-the-top romantic gestures provide Moliere with plenty of material for a satirical comedy, and he begins to work on a new play in secret.

As Moliere spends more time with Jourdain, he begins to develop feelings for Celimene. She is a sophisticated, intelligent woman who is fascinated by Moliere's talent and wit. The two begin to spend time together, and Moliere finds himself torn between his love for Celimene and his desire to use Jourdain's antics as material for his new play.

The tension between the characters builds as Jourdain's foolish behavior becomes more outrageous and Moliere's play takes shape. Eventually, Jourdain discovers Moliere's hidden agenda and is furious that he has been made the subject of ridicule in front of his friends and peers. He confronts Moliere, and the two engage in a heated argument.

In the end, Moliere is forced to leave Jourdain's estate and return to life on the road with his troop of actors. He performs his new play, which is a hit with audiences and finally leads to his success as a playwright. The film ends with Moliere, now a famous writer, beginning work on his next play while reflecting on his experiences with Jourdain, Celimene, and the rest of the characters he encountered along the way.

Overall, Moliere is a charming and entertaining movie that combines elements of comedy, drama, and romance. Romain Duris gives a captivating performance as Moliere, and Fabrice Luchini is perfectly cast as the delusional and egotistical Jourdain. The film beautifully captures the atmosphere of 17th-century France, and the costumes and sets are stunning. Fans of French cinema will particularly enjoy this film, but anyone who appreciates clever writing and witty dialogue will find something to enjoy in Moliere.

Moliere is a 2007 romance movie with a runtime of 2 hours. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.1 and a MetaScore of 59.
