More Dogs Than Bones is a heist comedy film released in 2000 by director Michael Browning. The movie stars Joe Mantegna, Peter Coyote, and Mercedes Ruehl. The film's storyline revolves around a group of criminals who are obsessed with a great sum of money secured inside a painting, the catch being the massive pile of dogs that lie in their way before they can get their hands on it.

The movie takes place in Palm Springs, California, where the main character, Victor (Joe Mantegna), is an out-of-time con artist trying to con his way of paying off a debt. The first scene opens with Victor fighting for custody of his dog, which he loves but is ultimately the judge grants ownership to his ex-wife, played by Lynn Whitfield. In his struggle to repay the debt, he teams up with two local criminals to steal a valuable painting that has a great sum of money inside it. But the catch, as the title tells it, is that the painting is guarded by a massive number of dogs that pretty much prevent the gang from even laying their eyes on it.

As the group plans to go forward with their plan, with Victor being the mastermind behind it all, things start to spiral out of control. When the painting gets stolen and the pile of dogs is left looking in all the wrong places, the group becomes burdened with trying to keep to their plan while simultaneously trying to get their hands on the hounds. Along the way, the gang starts to learn more about each other and their respective relationships with the dogs they come across.

Peter Coyote plays De Salvo, an art dealer who has long since coveted the painting Victor has his eyes on. He joins forces with Victor's gang when he sees the opportunity to get his hands on the valuable painting before the police catch on. Mercedes Ruehl plays a character named Lorraine, a woman Vic bumps into during his endeavor to run without paying off his old debt. She ends up joining the group as they hit several roadblocks trying to steal the painting.

The film has a cast of characters that are all trying to get to the bottom of their problems, each having to figure out their individual roles in the grand scheme of the robbery. The characters themselves are flawed, and their interactions with each other bring out different dynamics that are interesting to follow. Though the film's storyline revolves around the heist, the movie is more character-driven than it is about furthering the plot.

More Dogs Than Bones has its share of comedic moments in the script, which helps keep the movie light and amusing. Joe Mantegna's depiction of the film's protagonist, Victor, is effortless and humorous in a gruff way, playing up his smart, witty banter with the other characters. Peter Coyote portrays his role as the art dealer who trades in illegal deeds with plenty of humor as well. Coyote's character goes on to team up with Vic, against odds, and sets up the foundation for quite a few of the movie's hilarious moments.

Overall, More Dogs Than Bones is a lighthearted, fun heist movie with quirky characters that make it worth the watch. The comedy sprinkled throughout heightens the movie's charm, making it appeal even more to those who aren't big fans of the genre. The movie has decent pacing, great writing, and is far from predictable while still paying off when it matters. The movie's underlying messages of love, trust, and redemption add a level of warmth that is often missing from most other films of the same genre.

More Dogs Than Bones is a 2000 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.0.
