My Father the Hero tells the story of a divorced father desperate to please his estranged daughter on their vacation together. The story revolves around the imagined stories told by the daughter Nicole as she looks to impress local teenager Ben. Andre, Nicole's father, is dragged into the increasingly bizarre stories created by Nicole as she attempts to appear more adult than she really is. Her stories go so far as to claim Andre is her lover and not her father, which causes problems for Andre with the other residents of the hotel the family is staying in.

My Father the Hero is a US remake of the French comedy movie, Mon Pere, ce Heros, which also starred Gerard Depardieu as the desperate father, Andre. The relationship between father and daughter is strained throughout the movie by the arrival of Andre's girlfriend, Isobel, with whom Nicole has an unhappy and difficult relationship. As Nicole continued to fall for Ben, she makes up more and more far fetched stories that place Andre in difficult situations that become dangerous and increasingly comedic.
