Nowhere Boy is a movie based on the early years of John Lennon. The story starts with John as a teenager living with his Aunt Mimi. John often gets into trouble at school, which displeases his Aunt. She is a strict, yet loving person who wants John to strive to become more than what he seems to want. John has a buddy Pete, from school whom he hangs with when he has free time. John's Aunt Mimi is sister to his mother who has a different family not too far from where John lives. On a whim, John decides to pay his mother a visit and ends up spending the entire day with her.
John's mother introduces him to music and gives him his first guitar. John is drawn to his mother's free spirit, which is a change of pace from his Aunt Mimi's often stern personality. When Mimi learns John has been skipping school, she takes the guitar away from him. This only makes him more determined to follow the free spirited ways of his mother. Although John's mother seems to be very carefree she is actually battling her own mental demons. She is remarried to a man who loves her dearly and together they have two daughters.
John barely gets to develop a relationship with his mother when she is hit by a car as she crosses the street. She is killed instantly. The lack of closeness in John's relationships leads him to search for the truth behind his Aunt's custody of him. What John discovers about his mother and father surprises him. Although John has his struggles in life, he always remains close and loyal to his Aunt Mimi who is now the only family he has left.
The movie also shows how John first met Paul McCartney. John put together a mediocre band which performed at casual gatherings. Paul saw the band playing in a park and wanted to show John his guitar skills. Shortly afterward, John and Paul hooked up with George Harrison and formed the first Beatle's group.
