Out of the Ashes is a gripping and emotional historical drama that tells the story of Holocaust survivor Gisella Perl. The movie is based on Perl's memoir, “I was a Doctor in Auschwitz” and takes place in the years immediately following the end of World War II. Christine Lahti portrays Perl, a young Jewish woman who was taken to Auschwitz along with her family. She is separated from her husband and parents upon arrival at the concentration camp and soon discovers that her medical skills are her only hope for survival. Perl is put to work as a doctor in the camp's infirmary, where she witnesses the atrocities of the Nazis firsthand.

After the war, Perl is eventually liberated along with the other surviving prisoners. However, she suffers from severe emotional trauma and is plagued by survivor's guilt. Despite her mental anguish, Perl manages to make her way to America, where she hopes to begin a new life.

The movie Out of the Ashes follows Perl's journey as she struggles to rebuild her life in the face of overwhelming odds. Along the way, she encounters a number of people who help her on her journey, including Dr. Russell, played by Bruce Davison, and a young journalist named Sophie, played by Jonathan Cake.

Dr. Russell is a kind and compassionate physician who recognizes Perl's talent and determination. He offers her a job working at a clinic in New York City and becomes her mentor and friend. Sophie, on the other hand, is initially distrustful of Perl and her story. She is a tough and cynical reporter who is skeptical of Perl's claims of having been a doctor in Auschwitz. However, as she begins to delve deeper into Perl's past, Sophie begins to realize the truth of her remarkable story.

Despite the kindness of Dr. Russell and Sophie's eventual support, Perl still struggles with the memories of her time in Auschwitz. She is haunted by the faces of those who perished under her care, and the guilt she feels for having survived when so many others did not. These emotions are made even more difficult by the fact that Perl is unable to find her husband anywhere in the displaced person camps.

As Perl begins to adjust to her new life in America, she also finds herself confronted with the specter of her past. She is asked to testify at the Nuremberg Trials against the Nazi doctors who worked at Auschwitz, including one who was responsible for the death of many of Perl's friends and patients. This decision, whether or not to testify, forces Perl to confront the horrors of her past and decide what kind of a survivor she wants to be.

Out of the Ashes is a powerful and poignant movie that explores the complexities of Holocaust survival. It is a moving tribute to the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable evil. The performances of Christine Lahti, Bruce Davison, and Jonathan Cake are outstanding, and the movie's message of hope and redemption is one that will stay with viewers long after the credits roll.

Out of the Ashes is a 2003 drama. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8.
