Percy is an average teenager student who lives alone with his mother and step dad who has never known his real father. Classes are already ending for the summer and the school has a trip to the city museum where Percy will be the target of an attack by a monster disguised as his teacher. Percy cannot understand the motive behind the attack, but his faithful longtime friend Groover has always been at his side to protect him, and his Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner will give Percy a powerful pen to defend himself against the monster's attacks saving Percy, for the moment.
Percy has just learned that he is a demigod, half human, half god, and son of Poseidon. With the pen in hand, Percy is taken with his mother to hide in the Camp Half-Blood, where no one can enter only the demigods. Under attack again by a Minotaur, Percy uses the pen and discovers that it is a powerful sword, the sword that has been stolen from Zeus and must be returned to Mount Olympus in three days to prove that he is not the thief.
Confused by the news of being the son of Poseidon, Percy discovers that his best friend has always been a disguised satyr, his guardian and protector, and Mr. Brunner is a centaur. Once in the camp, Percy begins his training to develop his demigod powers and master them, as it is the only way to prove his innocence and fight the gods.
Inside Camp Half-Blood, Percy finds love in Annabeth, another demigod daughter of Athens who will be with him always; there he faces his uncle Hades, the villainous brother of Zeus and Poseidon, who was expelled from Olympus for treason. Hades has kidnapped Percy's mother who will live only in exchange for the lightning bolt, the most powerful weapon of the gods.
