In the movie Planet of the Apes from 2001, which was a remake of the original 1968 film of the same name, Mark Wahlberg plays Leo Davidson, a United States Air Force astronaut who travels through a wormhole in space and crash-lands on a seemingly unknown planet ruled by intelligent apes. The apes are the dominant species on the planet and humans are their slaves. Leo must team up with a small group of humans who have found a way to fight back against their oppressive simian overlords and find a way back to Earth.

The movie begins with Leo taking part in a training exercise with a group of chimps that can communicate using sign language. However, during the exercise, a strange electromagnetic storm pulls Leo and his chimp into a wormhole that takes them to an unknown planet. Leo's spacecraft crashes in a forest, where he is immediately captured by a group of intelligent apes on horseback. He is taken to a heavily fortified city where he discovers that humans are enslaved and treated like animals by the apes. Leo is able to communicate with the other humans using his knowledge of the apes' sign language, which he learned during his training exercise on Earth.

While imprisoned, Leo meets Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a female chimpanzee who is a vocal advocate for human rights. She is intrigued by Leo's intelligence and his ability to communicate with her using her own language. Ari becomes Leo's ally and helps him escape from the city. Together with a group of humans, they travel through the harsh desert landscape to reach a temple where Leo hopes to contact his ship and return to Earth. However, the group is pursued by General Thade (Tim Roth), the ruthless military leader of the apes who wants to capture Leo and prevent him from learning the truth about the planet.

As Leo and his companions journey through the treacherous landscape, they encounter different groups of apes and humans with their own agendas. Along the way, Leo learns more about the history of the planet, including a shocking revelation about its true identity. The final act of the movie takes place in the temple, where Leo and the other humans face off against General Thade and his army in a battle for freedom and survival.

The visuals of the movie are impressive, with stunning landscapes, lifelike apes, and detailed sets that bring the world to life. The score, composed by Danny Elfman, is also noteworthy, with a hauntingly beautiful main theme that enhances the emotional impact of the story.

Despite its high production values, the movie received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. Some praised its visuals and themes, while others criticized its plot inconsistencies and controversial ending. Nevertheless, it remains a memorable entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise and a testament to the enduring appeal of the original concept.

Planet of the Apes is a 2001 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 59 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7 and a MetaScore of 50.
