P.S. I Love You is a U.S. drama-comedy from director Richard LaGravenese who also wrote the screenplay with Steven Rogers. Based upon Cecelia Ahern’s 2004 novel, the plot covers death and grief with a helping of healthy laughter to balance out the story. The movie is dedicated to Windland Smith Rice, producer Molly Smith's sister and stars Academy Award winner, Hilary Swank (Holly), and Gerard Butler (Gerry).

Swank and Butler are a married couple. When Gerry Kennedy discovers he will die soon, he devises a plan to assist his wife through the inevitable grieving process to start her life over without him. The same as many couples, we see Holly and Gerry having verbal battles over how to raise the children, shopping, sex, finance and future plans.

They also struggle with the inherent differences in personality that made them more attractive to each other. For example, Holly is serious and intelligent, while Gerry is more fun loving with a stronger sense of humor. However, it is apparent that this couple has a very strong bond and marriage, despite the occasional argument.

As Gerry’s physical well being succumbs to illness, Holly is left to deal with life without her partner and best friend. Holly basically becomes a hermit in the throes of depression after he is gone. Withdrawing from her friends Sharon (played by Gina Gershon) and Denise (played by Lisa Kudrow), she refuses to respond to their phone calls. Her concerned mother, Patricia (played by Kathy Bates) knows that Holly is inconsolable and miserable, but does not know how to deal with her. Her daughter has basically developed into a mess who has resorted to not bathing and watching old movies.

Her beloved and departed husband knew her so well that he understood that she would withdraw from her friends and family after he was gone. Still deeply distraught, Holly’s loved ones arrive to force feed her a surprise party for her 30th birthday. They gather around to help her organize the apartment. A cake is delivered along with a personal message from Gerry. This would turn out to be the first of a series of letters that he had arranged to be delivered to her on certain dates after he had died.

Each letter ends with P.S. I Love You and included specific instructions as to how he wants her to get back into her life. For example, to pursue art, dress up, sing, party, travel and to love again. The letters all serve to gently guide her through the grief in order to successfully move forward without her soul mate.

P.S. I Love You is a 2007 drama with a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.0 and a MetaScore of 39.
