Punch Lady is a heartwarming and empowering South Korean sports drama film that was released in 2007. Directed by Kang Hyo-jin, the movie tells the story of a middle-aged housewife who finds inner strength and confidence through boxing. The film stars Do Ji-won as Ha-eun, the protagonist, who is a dutiful wife and mother but feels unfulfilled in her life. Ha-eun's husband, played by Kim Byeong-cheol, is physically and emotionally abusive, and she is struggling to keep her family together. Ha-eun's son, played by newcomer Choi Seun-gyu, is talented and passionate about boxing, but his mother discourages him from pursuing the sport, as she has had negative experiences with it in her past.

One day, Ha-eun stumbles upon a boxing gym and decides to take a class. Despite being out of shape and inexperienced, Ha-eun shows a natural aptitude for boxing and quickly becomes hooked on the sport. She starts to train every day in secret, hiding her bruises and injuries from her family.

As Ha-eun becomes more skilled and confident, she begins to assert herself in her personal life as well. She stands up to her abusive husband and takes control of her family's finances, earning money through odd jobs and even participating in underground boxing matches.

The film is an inspiring underdog story, as Ha-eun defies societal expectations of what a middle-aged woman should be and achieves success in a male-dominated sport. It is also a touching family drama, as Ha-eun navigates her relationships with her husband and son, ultimately finding more respect and love from them as she becomes an individual with her own passions and abilities.

Do Ji-won gives a powerful performance as Ha-eun, portraying her character's vulnerability and strength with equal grace. Kim Byeong-cheol is also excellent as Ha-eun's husband, creating a complex portrayal of a man who is both abusive and pitiable. Sulli Choi, in her first acting role, brings a youthful energy to the film as Ha-eun's son, adding heart and humor to the story.

The film's boxing scenes are well-staged and thrilling, showcasing the physicality and strategy of the sport. However, the film is more interested in exploring the emotional and psychological aspects of boxing, as Ha-eun finds catharsis and self-discovery in the ring. The film's pacing is slow at times, but it allows for depth and introspection in its characters.

Punch Lady is a poignant and uplifting film that celebrates the strength and resilience of women. It is a rare sports film that focuses on the internal journey of its protagonist, making it a unique and rewarding viewing experience.
