Rancid Aluminium is a British caper film released in 2000, directed by Edward Thomas and cast Joseph Fiennes, Rhys Ifans, Tara Fitzgerald, and Sadie Frost. The movie is based on James Hawes' novel of the same name. The plot revolves around two friends, Sean Deeny (Joseph Fiennes) and his friend Vincent (Rhys Ifans), who run a small detective agency in London. They quickly realize that their agency is not making enough money to cover their expenses, so they hatch a plan to get rich quick.

Sean's girlfriend, Lauren (Tara Fitzgerald), works for a credit card company and tells Sean that she has access to a large sum of money. Sean sees this as an opportunity to solve his money troubles, so he designs a plan to steal the money from the credit card company. He enlists the help of Vincent, who has a history of being a conman, to execute the plan. Meanwhile, Lauren is struggling with her job and is considering leaving the company. Sean's plan seems to be the perfect solution for Lauren to leave the company with a large amount of money.

As the plan progresses, the trio finds themselves entangled in a web of lies, deceit and betrayal. They encounter a series of unpredictable twists and turns, and soon begin to question everyone's motives, including each other's. The heist plan, which was meant to be a simple way to get rich, soon turns into a complicated nightmare.

The group's actions quickly catch the attention of a notorious gangster, Jimmy - played by Rhys Ifans' real brother Llyr Ifans - who has his sights set on the stolen money. Things spiral out of control when Jimmy sends his men after the trio, and Sean, Vincent and Lauren find themselves in the middle of a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse.

The rest of the plot is a thrilling ride, full of surprising twists and turns that keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The movie is an entertaining mixture of comedy, suspense, and action, with all the necessary elements of a classic heist movie. The three main plotlines, the heist plan, Lauren's job, and the gangster's pursuit, blend seamlessly into a cohesive story with a satisfying conclusion.

The movie gives a glimpse of the darker side of London, where people are willing to cut corners to get ahead, and danger lurks around every corner. The director, Edward Thomas, has done an excellent job of creating a moody and atmospheric world, complemented by a fantastic soundtrack by John Tams. The performances by the cast are also noteworthy, with Joseph Fiennes and Rhys Ifans delivering a particularly noteworthy performance.

In conclusion, Rancid Aluminium is a movie that is not to be missed for anyone interested in suspenseful and engaging caper movies. The movie delivers on all fronts, with an instantly engaging plot, colorful characters, and satisfying twists and turns. The movie may not have achieved mainstream success upon its release, but it is definitely one of the hidden gems of British cinema.
