Ransom is a 1996 American thriller film directed by Ron Howard and starring Mel Gibson, Gary Sinise, Rene Russo, Delroy Lindo, and Lili Taylor. The film is based on the 1956 novel, Ransom, by Ed McBain. The movie follows Tom Mullen (Mel Gibson), a wealthy airline owner, whose son, Sean, is kidnapped. When the ransom demand arrives, Tom decides to offer $2 million as the ransom. However, after the kidnappers receive the money, they fail to release Sean, and things take a turn for the worse.

Tom, who is now frustrated with the police's lack of progress, decides to take the matter into his own hands. He goes on live television and announces that he will pay $4 million to anyone who gives him information about the kidnappers. This move leaves the kidnappers stunned and puts the life of his son at risk.

Detective Jimmy Shaker (Gary Sinise) is the mastermind behind Sean's kidnapping. He has been planning it for months and has a personal vendetta against Tom. He is assisted by his girlfriend, Maris Conner (Lili Taylor), and another accomplice, Clark Barnes (Evan Handler).

As the days go by, Sean's life is at risk, and the kidnappers show no signs of releasing him. Tom, with the help of FBI agent, Ted (Delroy Lindo), begins his own investigation and eventually tracks down the kidnappers. The situation escalates, and things get dangerous when the kidnappers threaten to kill Sean.

Ransom is a thrilling and intense film that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The story explores the lengths a father will go to save his child and the dangers of taking justice into one's own hands. The film has intense action scenes and dramatic moments that add to the overall suspense.

Mel Gibson delivers an excellent performance as the desperate father who will go to any lengths to save his son. His portrayal of Tom Mullen is convincing and provides the right amount of emotional depth to the character. Gary Sinise is equally impressive in his role as the scheming Jimmy Shaker. He portrays the character with a cold and calculated demeanor, making him a worthy adversary to Tom.

The supporting cast of Rene Russo, Delroy Lindo, and Lili Taylor also deliver great performances, adding depth to their respective characters. The direction by Ron Howard is superb, and he maintains the tension throughout the film.

Overall, Ransom is a must-watch film for fans of the thriller genre. The story is gripping, and the performances by the actors are exceptional.
