Jamie's journal becomes public after she accidentally turns it in for an English assignment, and subsequently wins a writing contest. The journal is published and becomes a bestseller that launches Jamie into the public spotlight. The celebrity that comes with the success causes Jamie to become conceited and critical of her original group of friends to the point that they refuse to associate with her. After unintentionally revealing during an interview that the book's characters are based on students in her school, Jamie faces hostility from her peers who feel that she was mocking them with her story.
Isabella acts as an enabling figure during Jamie's rise to fame. After losing her friends' trust and learning her family may lose their pizza business, she realizes Isabella is a bad influence and banishes her from her conscience. Jamie is then able to admit her private journal was not intended for publication and make amends with her friends.
