Read It and Weep

Read It and Weep is a made for TV movie that aired on Disney channel. Based on the fictional novel by Julia DeVillers, the movie features Kay Panabaker as the protagonist Jamie Bartlett and her real life sister Danielle Panabaker as Jamie's imaginary alter ego Isabella. Jamie, a high school student, keeps a digital diary on her tablet computer, which allows her to draw pictures to accompany stories about the imaginary counterparts of her classmates and self. In her journal, Jamie imagines herself as an older teenager named Isabella who possesses magical powers that help her defeat her enemies. Isabella's magical world reflects Jamie's interpretation of high school as a place where bullies are evil witches that can be defeated by supernatural magic powers, the boy she has a crush on is a prince charming. Isabella's mature confidence makes her popular and cool, which is what Jamie secretly longs to be herself.

Jamie's journal becomes public after she accidentally turns it in for an English assignment, and subsequently wins a writing contest. The journal is published and becomes a bestseller that launches Jamie into the public spotlight. The celebrity that comes with the success causes Jamie to become conceited and critical of her original group of friends to the point that they refuse to associate with her. After unintentionally revealing during an interview that the book's characters are based on students in her school, Jamie faces hostility from her peers who feel that she was mocking them with her story.

Isabella acts as an enabling figure during Jamie's rise to fame. After losing her friends' trust and learning her family may lose their pizza business, she realizes Isabella is a bad influence and banishes her from her conscience. Jamie is then able to admit her private journal was not intended for publication and make amends with her friends.
