Relax...It's Just Sex was written and directed by P.J. Castellaneta. It is a romantic comedy that follows a close-knit group of couples from various backgrounds. Some are straight, while others are lesbian and gay. During the course of the film, the friends struggle to accept each other's lifestyles and decisions. Jennifer Tilly plays the role of Tara Ricotto. She acts as a mother hen to the group. She tries to hold them all together as they face many challenges. Several memorable moments play out around her dinner table.
In one pivotal event, the group is nearly torn apart by an act of violence. One of the gay couples in the group is attacked outside of a bar. The two of them fight back and one of them commits an act of violence toward his own attacker. Later, he comes to realize that he is unprepared to face the emotional aftermath of that terrible event. He eventually leaves the group to try and find himself.
The friends go on to face many more trials and tribulations. Tara is trying to get pregnant with her new boyfriend. She eventually does become pregnant, but loses the baby. Sarina learns that her lover Megan has cheated on her, with a man. To cope with the betrayal Sarina takes a new lover, Robin. Vincey loses his new boyfriend, Buzz to Javi. Then Javi reveals that he has recently learned that he is HIV positive. Buzz and Javi wrestle with the reality of HIV and what it means for their budding relationship.
