The sequel to the controversial 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon; both films are based on novels by Henry De Vare Stacpoole, although Return to the Blue Lagoon uses little of Stacpoole's sequel to The Blue Lagoon. The 101 minute movie was controversial upon its release because of the nude scenes featuring 15 year old Milla Jovovich in her role as Lilli.
Released as a direct sequel to The Blue Lagoon the 1991 Return to the Blue Lagoon was not as successful as its predecessor, despite using many of the plot points from The Blue Lagoon.
Lilli Hargrave and her mother Sarah set out on a journey by ship through the South Pacific Ocean with Sarah's adopted son, Richard; the boy is later revealed to be the son of Richard and Emmaline from The Blue Lagoon. Stranded on an island after being cast adrift from their ship the young children and their mother attempt to live a civilized life using Christian values as their guide.
Following Sarah's death a few years after they are stranded Lilli and Richard are left to fend for themselves. As they grow older the pair become physically attracted to each other and begin a love affair that concludes in a mock wedding ceremony in the jungle.
Return to the Blue Lagoon takes on a darker mood with the arrival of a ship carrying European travellers searching for treasures, such as pearls on the island. The arrival of civilization splits Lilli and Richard for a short period before he returns to rescue her from an attack by a member of the ship's crew. After initially asking for the help of the ship's catpain to return them to civilization Lilli and Richard decide to stay on the island when the ship leaves after Lilli reveals she is pregnant. The 101 minute film was released by Columbia Pictures and was directed by William A. Graham.
