Sam Manning (Fisher Stevens) is a former boxer trying to make a fresh start in New York City after his girlfriend left him. However, he finds his past constantly haunting him, as he struggles to find a job and pay the rent. One day, he stumbles upon a group of young graffiti artists and becomes enthralled with their work. Sam begins to form relationships with the artists, particularly Alex (Alex Porter), a young boy who is dealing with his own family issues. As Sam becomes more involved with the group, he has to navigate the line between mentor and friend. Meanwhile, he begins to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend, Cass (Annabella Sciorra), and their relationship becomes more complicated as Sam tries to balance his old and new life.

Through Sam's interactions with the graffiti artists, the film explores themes of identity and expression. The artists use graffiti as a means of communication, expressing their thoughts and feelings on the city they live in. Sam, who has always struggled with expressing himself, is inspired by their work and learns to embrace his own creativity.

At the heart of the film is the relationship between Sam and Alex. Sam sees a lot of himself in the young artist and wants to help him avoid the mistakes he made when he was younger. Alex is initially wary of the older man, but he begins to trust him as he sees how much Sam cares about him and his art.

The film also deals with issues of gentrification and the changing face of New York City. The artists see their work as a way to reclaim a city that is slowly being taken over by corporations and wealthy developers. Sam, who has seen his own neighborhood change drastically, understands their frustration and tries to help them find a way to make their voices heard.

Throughout the film, Fisher Stevens gives a compelling performance as Sam. He brings a sense of vulnerability to the character, showing the audience a man who is struggling to find his place in the world. Alex Porter is equally impressive as Alex, bringing a sense of maturity to a character who is dealing with some heavy issues.

Annabella Sciorra also shines as Cass, showing the complex emotions of a woman who is still in love with her ex but is wary of getting hurt again. The supporting cast is strong as well, with standout performances from Ron Rifkin and Luis Guzman as the owners of the building the artists are working on.

In terms of direction, the film is solid but unremarkable. Director Gary Winick (who sadly passed away in 2011) keeps the focus on the characters and their relationships, but there are few visual flourishes to make the film stand out.

Overall, Sam the Man is a heartfelt and engaging film that explores some important issues facing modern society. With strong performances and a compelling story, it's definitely worth checking out.

Sam the Man is a 2000 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 27 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8.
