Saptapadi is a 1961 Bengali romantic drama film directed by Ajoy Kar, starring Suchitra Sen, Uttam Kumar and Khitish Acharya in lead roles. The film is based on the story "Cardinal and Ordinal" by eminent Bengali writer Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay. The film is set in the period of the Bengal Renaissance in the mid-19th century. The movie revolves around the lives of two young individuals, Labanya (Suchitra Sen) and Subir (Uttam Kumar). Labanya is a headstrong and independent girl, who has been brought up in a progressive family. She is highly educated and well-read, and doesn't believe in the traditional notions of marriage or love. On the other hand, Subir is a young lawyer, who comes from a conservative and orthodox family.

The plot takes a turn when Labanya's father arranges for her to marry Subir. While Labanya is hesitant at first, she eventually agrees to the marriage. However, after the wedding, the couple's contrasting ideologies start to impact their relationship. Labanya's liberal views often clash with Subir's traditional mindset, leading to frequent arguments and disagreements. Despite all their differences, the couple eventually develops a deep understanding and respect for each other.

The film's title, Saptapadi, refers to the seven vows that are taken during a Hindu wedding ceremony. Each vow signifies a different aspect of marriage, such as love, trust, respect and companionship. The film beautifully showcases the importance of these vows in a marriage, and how they hold the power to bring two individuals closer and strengthen their bond.

Apart from the lead actors, Khitish Acharya also delivers a noteworthy performance as the supporting character, Bhombol Babu. He is a friend and confidante to both Labanya and Subir, and provides comic relief to the otherwise serious tone of the movie. The film's cinematography and music are also noteworthy, with beautiful shots of the rural Bengal landscape and soulful melodies that perfectly capture the emotions of the characters.

Saptapadi is considered a classic in Bengali cinema, and is known for its strong performances, engaging storyline and beautiful portrayal of the complexities of human relationships. The film's message of love and understanding, despite all differences, is still relevant in today's times. It remains a timeless masterpiece that continues to be cherished by audiences even today.
