Search and Destroy is a 1995 crime-comedy that follows Martin Mirkheim (Griffin Dunne), a struggling writer who gets entangled in a dangerous scheme with a notorious arms dealer, Ron (Dennis Hopper). Ron's eccentricities and manipulative personality pull Martin into an intricate web of lies and deceit. Martin's moral compass becomes blurred as he becomes more and more involved in Ron's world of illegal arms dealing and organized crime.

The movie is set in the 90s during the Gulf War, with the theme centered around guns and weaponry. Martin is struggling to make ends meet as a writer, and Ron approaches him with an offer to write his memoirs. Ron promises Martin millions for the book, and although Martin is initially hesitant, he quickly becomes seduced by the opportunity.

As Martin writes Ron's memoirs, he discovers that Ron is not only a criminal but a psychopath as well. Martin is caught up in a world of violence and drug use, and he can't seem to get out. Ron's true intentions come to light, and Martin realizes that he has to get out of this dangerous situation before it's too late.

As Martin tries to unravel the complexities of Ron's life, he also has to deal with personal conflicts. There's a rift between Martin and his father, and he's also trying to rekindle his romance with his ex-girlfriend, Lydia (Illeana Douglas). Martin becomes overwhelmed with guilt and stress, ultimately leading to a downward spiral that pushes him to the brink of insanity.

The movie has an entertaining cast of characters, including Jason Ferraro, who plays Ron's trigger-happy sidekick, and Ethan Hawke, who plays Dr. Luther Waxling, a drug-addicted psychologist. Dennis Hopper delivers an impressive performance as Ron, portraying the character with ease, despite his flawed and psychotic tendencies.

Search and Destroy is a unique blend of genres, drawing inspiration from numerous sources. The movie has elements of tragedy, comedy, and suspense, which work well together in creating an entertaining and engaging story. The film's cinematography and soundtrack evoke the essence of the 90s, making it a time capsule of sorts.

Director David Salle has a unique vision for the movie, and his signature style of combining abstract imagery and symbolism creates added depth to the narrative. The movie's themes of greed, deception, and power play into the human condition, highlighting the lengths people go to achieve their goals.

In summary, Search and Destroy is a gripping crime-comedy that is as thrilling as it is entertaining. The movie boasts an all-star cast, skillful direction, and a compelling story that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, the movie is a commentary on the complex nature of humanity and the lengths people go to achieve their goals.
