The performances in Shadows in the Palace are excellent, particularly Park Jin-hee's portrayal of Yeon-i. She brings a quiet strength to the role, and you can't help but root for her as she faces off against the palace's corrupt officials. Yun Se-ah is also fantastic as Ok-yeon, conveying both her vulnerability and her steely determination.

The film's production design is also worth noting. The palace is depicted as a labyrinthine structure, with dark hallways and claustrophobic rooms. The costumes are elaborate and beautiful, capturing the opulence of the Joseon Dynasty. The film also makes use of striking visual symbolism, such as an image of a butterfly pinned to a wall which represents the entrapment of the concubines.
