"Sleepaway Camp" is a 1983 horror film that follows the story of young Angela (Felissa Rose) and her cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) as they attend Camp Arawak, a summer camp for teenagers. Angela and Ricky are the lone survivors of a boating accident that killed their family, leaving Angela traumatized and mute. As they arrive at Camp Arawak, the two cousins quickly realize that the camp is not as idyllic as they thought it would be. They are met with bullies who mock and taunt them, and the counselors are not much help in stopping the harassment. Angela becomes the object of ridicule and is called "a weirdo" by the other campers. Things begin to take a turn for the worse as a string of gruesome murders occur at the camp, causing fear and panic among the staff and students.

As the body count continues to rise, Angela becomes the primary suspect in the killings. However, it's not just Angela who seems to have a dark side. The camp's head chef, Artie (Owen Hughes), seems to have a predilection for young boys, and there's a sense that he could be involved in the murders.

Over the course of the film, the mystery of the killings deepens, and the audience is left trying to piece together what's happening at Camp Arawak. Who is behind the murders? Why is Angela being singled out? And what secrets are the camp counselors hiding?

"Sleepaway Camp" is a low-budget horror film, but it manages to pack in plenty of suspense and scares. The film's director, Robert Hiltzik, does an admirable job of building an unsettling atmosphere, and the film benefits from a cast of young and largely unknown actors who bring a sense of authenticity to their roles.

One of the most striking things about "Sleepaway Camp" is its willingness to tackle uncomfortable subject matter. The film confronts the issue of child sexual abuse head-on, and while it's not always an easy watch, it's refreshing to see a horror film that's willing to grapple with these complex and disturbing themes.

That said, "Sleepaway Camp" is not without its flaws. The acting can be a bit wooden at times, and some of the characters are thinly drawn. Additionally, the film's ending has been criticized for being both disturbing and confusing.

Despite these issues, "Sleepaway Camp" has become a cult classic among horror fans. Its iconic twist ending and its willingness to tackle taboo subjects have helped cement it as a standout of the genre. If you're a horror fan looking for a film that's unsettling, suspenseful, and occasionally shocking, "Sleepaway Camp" is definitely worth a watch.

Sleepaway Camp is a 1983 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 27 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 58.
