Slugs is a 1988 horror film directed by Juan Piquer Simon and based on the horror novel of the same name by Shaun Hutson. The film stars Michael Garfield as Mike Brady, a small-town health inspector who discovers that a series of gruesome deaths in his town are being caused by mutant flesh-eating slugs. The film is set in a small American town called Ashton, where the residents are suddenly being attacked and killed by slugs. It starts with the brutal death of a couple who become the victims of an onslaught of slugs that viciously devour them in their own home. The police officials are baffled by the sudden surge of deaths in their town and are without any idea how to handle this unexpected turn of events.

Enter Mike Brady, the town's health inspector, whose job involves monitoring and maintaining hygiene conditions in the town's restaurants, food storage rooms, and factories, amongst other things. Brady is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of the sudden outbreak of slugs and discovers that these creatures have developed a field like resonance capability under the town itself, allowing them to tunnel more efficiently and quicker to a food source, which in this case is the human population of the town.

What rapidly evolves is a full-fledged war between the slugs and the residents of Ashton, with Brady leading the charge against the mutant slugs that are the source of death and destruction. Brady's investigation leads him to discover that the town's construction company, headed by a corrupt businessman, was dumping toxic waste into the ground, which inadvertently led to the mutation of the slugs.

As the residents are slowly being decimated by the slugs, Mike Brady and his team of experts struggle to find a way to stop them. There are attempts to poison the slugs with pesticides, explosives, and even electrocution, but all efforts seem to be in vain because the slugs just keep multiplying, and they appeared to be indestructible. The couple, Kim Terry and Philip MacHale, assist Brady with the investigation as the body count continues to rise.

Slugs is a gruesome film that portrays the kind of sheer terror resulting from an infestation of slugs. The production may be a bit low-budget, often relying on different camera angles, poor lighting, and a lack of quality special effects. However, despite these limitations, the film has earned a reputation as being one of the most memorable horror films of the 80s in its genre, with a particular focus on body horror.

One of the most gruesome scenes in the movie is when a man becomes infected by the slugs in his house, with the mutant creatures literally chewing their way through his body, resulting in his death. The film doesn't shy away from showing the effects of the slugs on the human body clearly. There is a slew of scenes containing blood, gore, and complete horror, which makes it very difficult to watch for the faint-hearted audiences.

Overall, Slugs is a classic horror film. It is a cult classic, which endures for those that indulged in its endless violence against humans. The actions sequences are kind of its center of attraction. The acting by the main characters is a bit clichéd, but it works for the film. Although it may not have received critical acclaim or won any prestigious awards, it remains a fan favorite horror film even to this day. Those who love horror movies should watch this for its classic feel, mind numbing terror and chilling atmosphere.

Slugs is a 1988 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.3.
