Battling 'Snow White' News: Viggo Mortensen Out, Armie Hammer In

As we have previously discussed, movies often come in pairs (see "Friends With Benefits" and "No Strings Attached"). We're due for another set of similar stories when two movies about Snow White hit theaters in 2012.

For those who aren't up to date on the projects: Relativity Media is planning a faithful Brothers Grimm adaptation of "Snow White" that has Julia Roberts attached to play the evil queen.

Meanwhile, Universal is working on "Snow White and the Huntsman," which takes a dark thriller approach as a huntsman is ordered to take Snow White into the forest to kill her, but changes his mind. "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart is attached to play Snow White.

There has been casting news over the weekend for both films as Armie Hammer is confirmed for Relativity's project and Viggo Mortensen has dropped out of "Snow White and the Huntsman." Hammer will be playing the prince, and anyone who saw him as the Winklevoss twins in "The Social Network" knows that he'll fit the part well. Mortensen, meanwhile, was originally in talks to play the Huntsman, but negotiations fell apart over the weekend.

Mortensen had also been rumored to be in consideration for Zack Snyder's Superman reboot tentatively titled "Superman: Man of Steel," in which he would play a yet-to-be-named villain. When Viggo was in talks for "Snow White and the Huntsman," the Superman project was out of the question as the shooting schedules were in conflict. Now that Mortensen is free, will he sign on with "Superman: Man of Steel"? Will he even be interested after Zack Snyder's weekend fiasco with the poorly-reviewed "Sucker Punch"?

Most importantly, will anyone see either of these Snow White movies when both of them are coming out around the same time? How many centuries-old fairy tale movies do we need in one year?
