Supernova is a sci-fi thriller that was released in 2000. The movie features an ensemble cast, including James Spader, Peter Facinelli, and Robin Tunney. The story is set in the distant future and revolves around a crew of astronauts who discover a mystery aboard their spacecraft. The movie begins on a medical spaceship named the Nightingale 229. The crew is mostly made up of doctors and nurses who are en route to a distant planet to answer a distress call. The team is established straight away, with James Spader playing the role of Nick, the ship's captain, Peter Facinelli as Karl, the ship's engineer, and Robin Tunney as Danika, the medical officer.

On their journey, they receive a distress signal from a nearby abandoned spaceship, the Magus. Against protocol, the crew decides to investigate the source of the signal, hoping to rescue any survivors. However, once they arrive they discover that the ship has been completely destroyed and only one survivor remains. The survivor is a man named Troy (Lou Diamond Phillips), who has been in suspended animation.

Nick and the crew nurse Troy back to health, but they quickly discover that he is hiding a dangerous secret. Troy is harboring a powerful weapon that has the potential to destroy the entire universe. The weapon is coveted by a psychotic man named Vespucci (Vincent Laresca), who Nick and the crew had previously encountered on a distant planet.

The crew of the Nightingale 229 must race against time to prevent Vespucci from getting his hands on the weapon as they try to find a way to safely dispose of it. Amidst the chaos of trying to save the universe, Nick and Danika begin to develop a romantic relationship.

The visuals of Supernova are stunning, and the futuristic setting is expertly crafted to transport the viewer into a world far beyond our current reality. The film's special effects and set design also hold up well even almost two decades after its release.

Supernova's performances are a mixed bag. James Spader as Nick is great, carrying much of the film's weight on his shoulders. Robin Tunney as Danika is also fairly solid, constantly adding to the sense of tension and drama. However, Peter Facinelli's performance as Karl falls short. His portrayal of the ship engineer is wooden, and the character ultimately comes across as two-dimensional.

Despite the talent of the cast and crew, Supernova was not a success at the box office. The movie has since been criticized for having a muddled storyline, with too many subplots and undeveloped characters. Some critics also found the film's themes and overall message to be underwhelming.

However, for those who are interested in sci-fi movies that explore complex themes and feature intense action scenes, Supernova is still worth a watch. The movie may not be perfect, but it still manages to deliver an exciting and suspenseful thrill ride with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Overall, Supernova is an action-packed sci-fi thriller that delivers some thrills and chills. While not a classic of the genre, the movie still has some interesting ideas and visuals that make it worth checking out for fans of space-themed action films.

Supernova is a 2000 science fiction movie. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8 and a MetaScore of 19.
