Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a 1999 American dark comedy film directed by Kevin Williamson, who is known for his work on the Scream franchise. The movie stars Helen Mirren, Marisa Coughlan, and Katie Holmes in the lead roles. The movie follows a group of high school students, who come up with a revenge plan against their strict and manipulative history teacher, Mrs. Tingle.

The story begins with Leigh Ann Watson, played by Katie Holmes, who is a hardworking high school student with a dream of attending an Ivy League college. She has put her heart and soul into her projects and homework and wants to achieve straight A's for her senior year. However, her biggest obstacle comes in the form of her history teacher, Mrs. Tingle, played by Helen Mirren. Mrs. Tingle is a strict and unforgiving teacher who takes great pleasure in tormenting her students. She is particularly harsh towards Leigh Ann, who she sees as a threat to her authority.

One day, Leigh Ann and her friends Luke and Jo Lynn, played by Barry Watson and Marisa Coughlan respectively, stumble upon Mrs. Tingle's grade book, which contains evidence of a mistake she made in grading one of Leigh Ann's papers. This discovery gives them the upper hand, and they use it to blackmail Mrs. Tingle into giving Leigh Ann the A she deserved. However, their plan backfires, and they end up taking Mrs. Tingle hostage in her own home.

As the night progresses, the students make a series of mistakes that lead to the situation spiraling out of control. The movie is filled with twists and turns as the students try to keep Mrs. Tingle under control while struggling with their own morals and the consequences of their actions. Meanwhile, Mrs. Tingle tries to manipulate the students and turn them against each other.

Throughout the movie, we see how Mrs. Tingle's own harsh and manipulative behavior has pushed her students to the point of desperation. We also see how Leigh Ann's determination to succeed and Luke's loyalty to his friends puts them in increasingly dangerous situations. Marisa Coughlan's character, Jo Lynn, is the voice of reason, arguing against the plan and warning the others of the potential consequences.

One of the highlights of the movie is undoubtedly Helen Mirren's performance as Mrs. Tingle. Despite being the antagonist of the story, she manages to bring a level of depth to the character, showing us her vulnerability and the reasons behind her cruel behavior. Katie Holmes also delivers a strong performance as Leigh Ann, who starts off as a timid student but grows in strength and confidence as the movie progresses. Barry Watson and Marisa Coughlan's performances as Luke and Jo Lynn, respectively, add the much-needed humor to the movie, balancing out the tension and drama.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a dark comedy that offers a fresh take on the high school genre. It's a story about the lengths students will go to when pushed too far by a manipulative teacher, and the consequences of those actions. The movie is filled with suspense, humor, and drama, making it an enjoyable watch for fans of the genre.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a 1999 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.3 and a MetaScore of 35.
