'Flight of the Conchords' Star Bret McKenzie Cast in 'The Hobbit'!

Peter Jackson's adaptation of "The Hobbit" is finally underway. But you know what it could use? A comedy song about a Hiphopopotamus.

"Flight of the Conchords" star Bret McKenzie has been confirmed for a role as an elf in "The Hobbit." The casting might seem like it's out of left field, but McKenzie is a native of New Zealand, where "The Hobbit" is being filmed.

For those who missed out on "Flight of the Conchords," it was a brilliant little show that ran on HBO for two seasons. The show featured the Grammy-nominated comedy duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, who played a pair of New Zealanders who had dreams of being famous musicians in the U.S. The show included a number of hilarious comedy songs in each episode.

There are no other details about McKenzie's role at this time, but considering the announcement came after filming began and he's a "local hire," the role will probably be a quick cameo...and most likely comedic in nature.

Check out the clip below for a taste of what Bret and Jemaine did on "Flight of the Conchords."
