The Bells Go Down is a war drama film set in London during the early days of WWII. The movie revolves around a group of firefighters who are called upon to save the city from the Luftwaffe's bombing raids. The film stars Tommy Trinder as Tommy Turk, a cocky but talented firefighter who leads his colleagues on daring and dangerous missions to save their fellow citizens from the destruction wrought by the German bombers.

James Mason plays Major Dillon, the commander of the local fire brigade who is responsible for coordinating the efforts of the firemen and keeping morale high during the increasingly desperate situation. Philip Friend portrays David, a young American journalist who comes to London to cover the war and ends up being caught up in the chaos and danger of the bombings.

The film begins with a group of firefighters, led by Tommy Turk, rescuing a group of people from a burning building after a bomb hits it. The firefighters battle on despite the danger, with Tommy taking risks and constantly testing his own bravery. Major Dillon is impressed by their courage and recommends Tommy and his men for a commendation.

As the war intensifies, the bombing raids become more frequent and the danger from the fires they cause becomes even greater. Tommy and his crew are called upon to deal with these emergencies as well as rescuing the people caught up in them. This includes a scene where they have to rescue a group of children who are trapped in a burning school.

David, the American journalist, is assigned to cover the brave work of the firefighters and becomes obsessed with getting the inside story. He risks his own life to get close to the action and capture the bravery of the firefighters on film. He becomes close to Tommy, who takes him under his wing, showing him the ropes of firefighting and the importance of staying calm under pressure.

As the war continues, the bombings become more intense, and the firefighters find themselves stretched to their limit. The film culminates in a spectacular set piece where the fire brigade, led by Tommy, has to find and extinguish a fire in a large building. The building turns out to be a munitions factory, and the firefighters have to work extra hard to prevent a catastrophe.

Throughout the film, there is a sense of danger and tension that builds with each bombing raid. The scenes of destruction are visceral and realistic, and the audience can feel the fear and desperation of the people involved. The film explores the bravery and determination of the firefighters during this difficult time and highlights the need for cooperation and sacrifice in times of crisis.
