The Confession is a 1999 film about a man named Harry Fertig (played by Ben Kingsley) who is a successful tax attorney in New York City. However, Harry becomes disillusioned with his life and his law career, coming to view his work defending wealthy tax evaders as shallow and morally bankrupt. One day, Harry decides to change his life by confessing to a crime he committed as a young man. As a college student, Harry was part of a group of anti-war activists who accidentally killed a security guard during a protest. Harry and his friends covered up the crime, but over the years Harry has been haunted by guilt over what happened.

Harry goes to see an old friend, Jacks (played by Alec Baldwin), who is now a Catholic priest. Jacks gives Harry the opportunity to confess his crime, and Harry begins to unburden himself of his secrets. Jacks is torn between his obligation as a priest to keep all confessions confidential and his own sense of morality, and the two men begin a complex dialogue about the nature of culpability and atonement.

Throughout the film, there are flashbacks to Harry's past life as a radical activist, and we see how his experiences during that time shaped him into the man he is now. There are also scenes in the present day where Harry tries to make amends for his past sins, including reaching out to the family of the security guard who was killed.

As the film progresses, Harry's situation becomes more and more complicated. The police begin to investigate the old crime, and Harry has to decide whether to come clean and risk going to prison, or to continue to cover up his role in the death. Meanwhile, Jacks struggles with his own feelings of guilt and responsibility, and begins to question his role as a priest.

The Confession is a thought-provoking exploration of morality, guilt, and redemption. Ben Kingsley gives an excellent performance as a flawed and conflicted man searching for meaning in his life, while Alec Baldwin provides a nuanced portrayal of a priest torn between his religious duties and his own sense of right and wrong. The film asks difficult questions about the nature of justice and forgiveness, and leaves the viewer with much to ponder.

The Confession is a 1999 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 54 minutes.
