The Doctor is a 1991 drama film. The film is focused on Jack McKee, who is a successful doctor. Jack McKee seems to have absolutely no problems and has built up a career as a very successful doctor. However, life changes for Jack McKee after he is diagnosed with throat cancer. Jack McKee suddenly finds himself as no longer a doctor, but is instead an average patient dealing with the problems of having life threatening cancer. Jack McKee has to deal with the experience of having tests done, undergoing surgery, chemo therapy, and the uncertainty of life. Jack McKee soon discovers that medicine is not a scientific practice and that it is important for him to treat his patients in a more human manner. Jack McKee later uses this experience to improve the way that he practices medicine.
The Doctor is based on the book A Taste of My Own Medicine by Ed Rosenbaum. It was adapted for film by Robert Caswell. The Doctor was directed by Randa Haines, and the main character Jack McKee is played by William Hurt.
