In The Drowning Pool, Paul Newman plays a private investigator named Lew Harper, who is hired by an old flame to look into a blackmail attempt. The woman, named Iris Devereaux (played by Joanne Woodward), is living in a luxurious mansion outside of New Orleans, where she is being harassed by anonymous letters. The investigation takes a dark turn when a man who was living on the property is found dead, drowned in the pool. Harper soon discovers that there are several suspects with motives for murder, including Iris's ex-husband, J.J. Kilbourne (played by Anthony Franciosa), a shady local businessman with a gambling problem.

As Harper delves deeper into the case, he becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and corruption that threatens to consume him. He must navigate the dangerous underbelly of a society built on lies and secrets in order to uncover the truth and bring the killer to justice.

The Drowning Pool is a moody and atmospheric thriller, set against the backdrop of the sultry, steamy South. The film's lush cinematography captures the beauty of the Louisiana bayou, even as it underscores the danger lurking just beneath the surface.

Newman delivers a nuanced performance as Harper, a jaded and cynical man who nevertheless maintains a fierce sense of justice. Woodward is also excellent as Iris, a complicated and enigmatic woman whose motives are never entirely clear.

The supporting cast is equally strong, with Franciosa bringing a menacing edge to J.J. Kilbourne and Murray Hamilton delivering a memorable turn as a corrupt local politician.

Directed by Stuart Rosenberg (Cool Hand Luke), The Drowning Pool is a taut and suspenseful thriller that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. With its gripping plot, complex characters, and stunning visuals, it is a must-watch for fans of the genre.

The Drowning Pool is a 1975 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5 and a MetaScore of 48.
