Based on real events and fusing allegedly real life footage with standard acted out scenes. The Fourth Kind tells the horrifying story of allegedly real life psychiatrist Dr. Abigail Tyler, and provides one of the strongest cases to this day of alien abduction otherwise known as close encounters of the fourth kind. Dr. Tyler is a psychiatrist in Anchorage, Alaska the real life town that has more missing persons per year than anywhere in the United States. Tyler's appointments with various citizens of Anchorage, start becoming very bizarre and eventually Tyler discovers that something very sinister is happening to many of her patients. Within a matter of weeks all most all of her patients come in telling her similarly eerie stories, that become even more bizarre and twisted after she puts her patients into hypnosis is discover repressed memories about the events. The patient's stories combined with Anchorage's alarming missing person rate leads Tyler to believe that alien abductions may be taking place in Anchorage. The hypnosis sessions propel Tyler into a fact finding mission. She recruits a multitude of alien experts to help her find out what is going on in Anchorage. Tyler even discovers evidence that her own self may have been abducted by aliens, and throughout the film she is constantly wondering if this alien phenomenon in Anchorage has anything to do with the death of her husband, who was bizarrely and without any known motive murdered months before the film started.
The film is very adamant in purporting that the found footage scenes are 100% real, all coming from the real life Dr. Tyler's archives of recorded sessions, Anchorage Police Department cameras, and other reliable sources. The film tries to convince viewers that it is true so strongly that it even has PSA style videos with actress Mila Jovovich at the beginning and end of the film to assure viewers the whole story was true, and of the seriousness of the subject matter. In despite of the films efforts to get viewers to believe it's story, critics have often argued that the story is totally fake and that Dr. Abigail Tyler isn't even a real person.
Mila Jovovich has a very intense performance, starring as Dr. Abigail Tyler. The supporting cast of the film is also very strong casting Elias Koteas as Dr. Abos Campos, a doctor and associate of Tyler, and Will Patton as Sheriff August, the sheriff of Anchorage and friend of Tyler.
