The Harvest is a psychological thriller film that was directed by John McNaughton in 2013. The movie tells the story of a couple who are struggling with the illness of their son and decide to keep him hidden from the world in their remote farm. The Harvest stars Samantha Morton as Katherine, the overprotective mother caring for her son Andy (Charlie Tahan) who has an unspecified illness. Michael Shannon plays Richard, the father who supports his wife's decision to keep Andy isolated. The couple lives on a farm and has kept their son under close watch for seven years. The only person in their lives is a visiting nurse, Maryann (Natasha Calis), who occasionally checks on the boy's health.

As the movie begins, we see that Katherine is highly protective of Andy and has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep him healthy. She has even created a sterile room within their farm's barn, where Andy spends most of his time. Katherine has made everything impossible for Andy to have any contact with the outside world, as she fears that if he gets in touch with any germs, he may die.

The arrival of Maryann marks a turning point in the movie. When Maryann comes to check on Andy, she expresses concerns about his health to Katherine and Richard. Maryann, who is a teenager herself, finds herself attracted to Andy's vulnerable nature and feels sorry for his isolation. She starts to sneak around with him, playing games and exploring the farm, making Andy's once dull life full of new and exciting experiences.

As Maryann's visits become more frequent, Katherine begins to become suspicious of her intentions. She believes that Maryann is trying to take Andy away from her, which increases her fear and anxiety, something that Michael Shannon's character, Richard, tries to calm. He believes that Maryann is just helping his son's situation, but Katherine sees her as a threat.

As the movie continues, it becomes obvious that the couple has more dangerous ulterior motives behind keeping Andy hidden in their farm. The tension began to build as the story moved into its climax. Questions arise, such as whether Andy is really sick or if he is being held captive. As the answers are slowly revealed, the grim reality becomes apparent, and the audience is left shocked.

The Harvest is a suspenseful film that builds up the tension slowly and gradually. The movie is unique in that it does not rely solely on jump scares or extravagant gore to create fear in the viewer. Instead, it focuses on the fear of losing one's child and the dangers of overprotection.

The actors in the movie did an excellent job portraying their characters. Samantha Morton did an impeccable job portraying Katherine's fear and anxiety over losing her child, while Michael Shannon's character, Richard, brought balance to the couple's relationship. Natasha Calis breathed life into a character that could have been stereotypical and dull.

The cinematography in the movie was stunning. The filmmakers did an excellent job in portraying the idyllic setting of the farm and the bleak reality of the family's situation. The haunting score added to the tension and created a sense of unease that persisted throughout the movie.

The Harvest is not a film for everyone. It is a bleak and intense story with a disturbing ending that could leave some viewers feeling unsettled. However, for those who enjoy psychological thrillers and films that delve into the darker aspects of human nature, The Harvest is an excellent choice. It's a well-made film that has kept the audience intrigued from start to finish and will keep you thinking about it long after you've watched it.
