The Houseguest and My Mother is a South Korean film directed by Shin Sang-ok in 1961, which stars Choi Eun-hee and Jeon Young-sun, among others. This film blends elements of traditional melodrama and film noir to tell the story of a mother and daughter's interactions with a mysterious man. The film begins with the news that the Korean War has ended, and people are returning to their homes. A woman named Jeong-ae (Jeon Young-sun) and her mother (Kim Yeon-jeong) live in a modest apartment in Seoul. Their lives are disrupted when a man named Kwang-su (Kim Jin-kyu) shows up unannounced in their home. Kwang-su introduces himself as an old acquaintance of Jeong-ae's brother, who died in the war.

Jeong-ae's mother isn't pleased with Kwang-su's arrival and demands he leave, but Jeong-ae vouches for Kwang-su and insists they let him stay for a few days. As days turn into weeks and then a month, Jeong-ae's mother becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the stranger in their house. She has good reason to be wary - Kwang-su's intentions aren't entirely clear, and his presence begins to take on ominous overtones.

As Kwang-su's stay progresses, tension grows between him and Jeong-ae's mother. She becomes convinced that Kwang-su is taking advantage of her daughter and is plotting something sinister. Meanwhile, Jeong-ae's feelings for Kwang-su deepen, but she remains unaware of the danger lurking behind his charming facade.

The Houseguest and My Mother succeeds at combining elements of both a traditional melodrama and a film noir thriller. Director Shin Sang-ok expertly portrays the psychological drama of three inhabitants in a small Seoul apartment, adding suspenseful moments with shadowy camerawork and eerie sound effects.

Choi Eun-hee's portrayal of a sweet and innocent young woman is particularly noteworthy. Jeong-ae often wears bright colors and ribbons in her hair, which contrast starkly with the darker tones of the film overall. She's a sympathetic and relatable character caught up in events that quickly spiral out of her control.

As Kwang-su, Kim Jin-kyu is the perfect counterpart. He's charming and sincere, appearing to be nothing more than a polite houseguest - but there's a hint of danger lurking below the surface. Over time, Kwang-su's intentions become more and more unclear.

Kim Yeon-jeong is the final piece of this three-person ensemble. As Jeong-ae's mother, she's alternately suspicious and protective of her daughter. Her concerns are well-founded - as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Kwang-su is not who he said he was.

The Houseguest and My Mother is a film that builds slowly but surely towards a powerful crescendo. Its mix of domestic drama and psychological thriller elements make it a standout film, and Choi Eun-hee's and Jeon Young-sun's performances make it unforgettable. Shin Sang-ok's masterclass of a movie is a triumph of Korean cinema, and a must-see for fans of genre-blending thrillers.
