The Kill-Off is a 1989 mystery-thriller movie based on a novel of the same title by Jim Thompson. Set in a small coastal town in Florida, the movie depicts a dark and twisted tale of murder, betrayal, and secrets. The story revolves around two main characters, Myra, a beautiful but troubled young woman, and Donald, a local bartender who is obsessed with her. Myra is married to Harry, a wealthy and abusive man who runs a motel in town. While Myra is trying to escape from her unhappy marriage, she gets involved in a web of deceit and violence that leads to a series of murders.

The movie begins with a voice-over narration by Myra, who introduces us to the different characters in the story. We are introduced to Harry, who is portrayed as a cruel and sadistic man, and his mother, Mrs. Peasley, a manipulative and controlling woman who seems to have a secret agenda. We also meet the local sheriff, who is more interested in fishing than solving crimes, and a group of eccentric and shady characters who hang out at Donald's bar.

As the story unfolds, we learn that Myra is having an affair with Donald, who is in love with her. Donald is a sympathetic character who is willing to do anything to protect Myra from Harry's abuse. However, his obsession with her clouds his judgment and makes him a prime suspect in the murders that start to occur in the town.

The murders, which are brutal and violent, add a layer of tension and mystery to the plot. The victims are mostly men who have some connection to Myra or Donald, and the killer's identity remains a mystery until the end. The local sheriff gets involved in the investigation, but he is no match for the twisted minds of the characters involved.

The cinematography is one of the strongest aspects of the movie. The coastal setting, with its seedy motels and bars, creates a dark and claustrophobic atmosphere. The use of low-key lighting, long takes, and tight close-ups adds to the sense of unease and menace that permeates the story. The movie's soundtrack, which features blues and jazz music, enhances the noir atmosphere.

The acting is solid, with Loretta Gross delivering a convincing performance as Myra, a woman trapped in an abusive marriage. Andrew Lee Barrett is believable as Donald, a man torn between his love for Myra and his sense of right and wrong. Jackson Sims is excellent as the sadistic Harry, a man who enjoys inflicting pain on others.

The Kill-Off is not a movie for everyone. Its bleak and disturbing content, combined with its slow pace and ambiguous ending, may turn off some viewers. However, for those who appreciate a well-crafted mystery-thriller with complex characters and a strong sense of atmosphere, The Kill-Off is a must-see. It is a movie that stays with you long after the credits roll.
