The King is an independent film directed by James Marsh and starring William Hurt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Derek Avarado, E. Matthew Buckley, Monica Pena and Veronica Bernal. The film is a drama and received a R rating for graphic language and violence and scenes of intense sexuality. The story follows a young man named Elvis, a former sailor in the navy, recently discharged and set on returning to his home of Corpus Christi in Texas. While there he befriends the innocent daughter of a zealous preacher. The two become increasingly infatuated with each other, and the brother of the family looks upon this development with ire and disdain. He tells Elvis to leave his sister alone. Elvis promptly kills him and tells his lover that he has murdered her brother. What follows is a dark, deep, philosophically detailed gothic descent into utter madness and religious fanaticism.

Gael Garcia Bernal garned rave reviews and much praise for his portrayal of the disturbed and nuanced Elvis.

The King is a 2006 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 58.
