The Milky Way is a 1969 black and white film directed by Luis Buñuel. The movie is a surrealistic exploration of the Christian faith as it follows two pilgrims, Pierre and Jean, as they journey across Europe on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Pierre and Jean are two Frenchmen who meet on the road and decide to continue their journey together. Pierre is a devout Catholic who has come to redeem his past sins with the help of a series of miracles while Jean is an agnostic who is simply taking the journey for the adventure.

The movie is divided into two parts, each of which represents one of the two paths to salvation – the way of nature and the way of grace. Along their journey, the two men encounter a series of bizarre characters and events that challenge their beliefs and bring into question their understanding of faith.

The first part of the movie, the way of nature, is represented by scenes in the countryside where the two travelers meet a group of monks who engage in a theological debate. They are also accosted by bandits and engage in a duel with a man who represents the devil.

The second part of the movie, the way of grace, takes place primarily in urban areas, where Pierre and Jean encounter a series of strange and surreal characters, including an excommunicated priest who has become a heretic, a bishop who is more concerned with his bank account than his faith, and a man who is convinced that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

Throughout the movie, the journey is punctuated by a series of vignettes that critique various aspects of modern society, including materialism, sexuality, and religious dogma. Buñuel employs a range of surrealistic techniques, including dream sequences, flashbacks, and jump cuts, to create a disjointed narrative that mirrors the pilgrims' own sense of confusion and disorientation.

The Milky Way is a complex and challenging film that requires a great deal of effort on the part of the viewer to fully appreciate. Its themes and imagery are often ambiguous and open to interpretation, and there are many moments of violence and blasphemy that may offend some viewers. However, for those willing to engage with the movie on its own terms, it offers a profound exploration of the nature of faith and the complexities of the human psyche.

The Milky Way is a 1969 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.4.
