The Ninth Circle is a 1960 Yugoslavian drama. It centers on a teenaged Jewish girl and her Catholic friend during the WWII Nazi occupation. When her parents are arrested, the boy’s family pressures them to get married in order to keep her safe. He is reluctant because he has a girlfriend and the girl runs away to save him from the pain of having to choose. He realizes that she is the one he is in love with and sets out to find her. She has since been captured and sent to the Ninth Circle, a concentration camp. Their escape attempt and tragic end close this bittersweet story.
