In the hit 1968 film, The Odd Couple, two men, Felix Ungar (Jack Lemmon) and Oscar Madison (Walter Matthau), who couldn't be more different, end up living together after going through divorces. Felix is uptight, fastidious, and a complete neat freak who is struggling to come to terms with his marriage ending. On the other hand, Oscar is sloppy, unkempt, and content living the bachelor's life. Although the two were friends before, living together proves to be a challenge as they are polar opposites in every way.

As the film begins, Felix is being kicked out of his house by his wife, which prompts him to call Oscar and ask if he can stay with him for a while. Oscar agrees to let him stay, and that's when the hilarity ensues. The apartment is small, but Felix manages to take over the entire space with his neuroticism and compulsive cleaning.

While Felix tries his best to keep the apartment in order, Oscar does the exact opposite. He leaves clothes strewn all over the floor, dishes piled up in the sink, and generally has zero regard for cleanliness. The two clash in every way imaginable, and their odd-couple setup leads to the film's comedic moments.

As they settle into living together, Felix gets a job as a TV news writer, which is his dream job. Oscar, on the other hand, is a sports journalist who is more interested in drinking beer and playing poker. He also has two female friends, Gwendolyn and Cecily Pigeon (Monica Evans and Carole Shelley), who come over a few times a week. The Pigeon sisters are the complete opposite of Felix, who finds Gwendolyn particularly appealing.

Although the Pigeon sisters bring out the best in Felix, Oscar doesn't find them as appealing. He watches on as Felix tries to impress Gwendolyn with his newfound skills in making spaghetti and through other attempts to impress her. Oscar remains content with living his bachelor's life, which often includes poker games, beer-drinking, and watching sports.

As the film runs its course, tensions continue to rise. The two men's contrasting personalities cause them to clash at every turn. Things come to a head when the TV news station where Felix works brings out a newscast that Oscar is produced. While Oscar intends the newscast to be edgy and real, Felix is horrified by it, taking the editing job into his own hands, and causing great conflict.

The Odd Couple is a comedic masterpiece, filled with hilarity and wit that never gets old. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are perfect in their roles, bringing their A-game to the table. The Pigeon sisters add an extra dose of hilarity to the mix, leaving the audience in splits. The film's script is brilliant, and even though it dates back to 1968, the humor still resonates with modern-day audiences.

The movie was a significant hit in its time, grossing over $44 million at the box office. It went on to become a beloved classic and spawned a TV series of the same name that aired from 1970-1975. The success of the TV series prompted a sequel, The Odd Couple II, which was released in 1998.

Overall, The Odd Couple is a must-watch for fans of comedy. It's a film that has stood the test of time and continues to be one of the most beloved comedies out there.

The Odd Couple is a 1968 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.6 and a MetaScore of 86.
