The Over the Hill Band is a 2009 Belgian comedy-drama film directed by Geoffrey Enthoven. The film follows the story of a group of four women in their fifties who rediscover their passion for music after years of neglecting their dreams. The film explores the theme of ageing, friendship and self-discovery. The protagonist, Claire (Barbara Sarafian), is a fifty-something year old woman who lives a suburban life with her husband and two children. She provides care for her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Claire's life is mundane, and she spends most of her day at home playing solitaire while her husband works. One day, while she is helping her friend Danielle (Annemie Gils) move house, she meets three old friends Kelly (Elise Bundervoet), Lydia (Lut Tomsin) and Muriel (Jits Van Belle). They formed a band when they were teenagers called The Sisters of Love, but they went their separate ways after a fallout over a gig. The women reminisce over their glory days and decide to get together to catch up. During their reunion, Claire discovers that her friends have kept their musical skills alive and have continued to play music. She realises that she misses music and wishes to reignite the fire within her.

The next day, Claire purchases a keyboard and starts practising after many years of not playing. Her husband, who is unsupportive, reacts badly to her new hobby, which causes tension in their relationship. Despite this, she continues to play and invites her former bandmates to join her. They agree, and the band comes together. However, they realise that they need a drummer and seek out a musician to complete their lineup. They find Dirk (Lucas Van den Eynde), a washed-up drummer who used to play for The Scabs, a famous Belgian rock band. The women persuade him to play for their band, causing him to come out of his shell and renew his love for music.

Together the team begins to practice for their first gig, which is a charity concert for Alzheimer's research. The band decides to take their music seriously and upgrades their setup to include lights and costumes, but they face challenges due to technical hitches and creative differences. Nonetheless, they manage to overcome these challenges, and their first concert is a success.

As the band continues to grow, so does Claire's confidence. She experiences a personal awakening and realises that she doesn't need to live her life in the shadows of others. She becomes vocal about her desire to live freely, and although her husband is unhappy about this change, she continues to pursue her dreams.

The Over the Hill Band is a moving, heartfelt comedy-drama that tells a story of self-discovery and the importance of pursuing one's passion. The film successfully explores the realities of ageing and the struggles that come with it. The film is well-acted, and the characters are relatable, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their stories. Although the plot may not break new ground, the themes it explores are universal, resonating with viewers from all walks of life. Overall, The Over the Hill Band is a lighthearted movie for anyone who wants to be entertained while also being uplifted.
