The film, The Race, is a story of an 11-year-old girl from a poor community named Mary. She dreams of becoming a race car driver one day, but there isn't many opportunities because she lives in a rural Irish setting. Due to the fact that she loves anything to do with cars, she takes an opportunity to compete in a go-car race. The odds of her winning are not all that great but she decides to join the race anyways. Even though she's only eleven years-old, she passes herself as a veteran racer throughout the film.

Her parents are always arguing; they live together in a Country Antrim farm. The couple is always fighting about financial and personal issues, they haven't realized that she really likes racing. She finds out that there will be a go-cart race in the area for children, and she decides to enter. The race was announced by a local rich farmer. Mary wants to prove that she has the skills to be a race car driver, so she enters the race.

It's going to be hard for Mary to compete in the race because her parents don't agree with the decision for her to race. In addition, Mary runs into problems when she gets teased at school because she's participating in a sport that is usually dominated by males. Despite her challenges, she is not going to give up her desire to become a race car drive. She is persistent about being a race car driver.

Mary gets some help from her good friend, Tom. They build a race car that will help her across the finish line. Mary is able to win the race even though the odds are stacked against her. The film falls under the categories of drama and sport.
