In 1938 Los Angeles, we meet Clifford "Cliff" Secord, a young aspiring pilot who dreams of competing in the next National Air Races. Unfortunately, he's stuck barnstorming with his best friend, Peevy, for a living. One day, while working on their plane, they stumble upon a hidden jetpack prototype that was stolen from the government by a group of Nazi spies.

Excited by the possibilities of the jetpack, Cliff takes it for a spin around town, only to realize he's not the only one after it. Soon, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous game of espionage, caught between the FBI, the mob, and the Nazi spies, who all want the jetpack for their own purposes.

As Cliff tries to navigate this web of conflicting interests, he decides to use the jetpack to become a masked hero known as "The Rocketeer." With the help of his girlfriend, aspiring actress Jenny Blake, and Peevy, who creates custom gadgets for him, Cliff sets out to stop the Nazis from using the jetpack to further their evil plans.

In the midst of all this, we see Cliff's character growth from a carefree young man to a responsible hero. He learns to use his newfound fame to help those in need and stand up for what's right. His relationship with Jenny also deepens, as they both face danger and overcome obstacles together.

The Rocketeer is a love letter to old-fashioned adventure films, with stunning aerial stunts, thrilling action set pieces, and a charming, witty script. Billy Campbell shines as the affable and heroic Cliff, while Jennifer Connelly adds depth and spunk to Jenny. Alan Arkin steals scenes as the eccentric Peevy, and Timothy Dalton chews the scenery as the suave and villainous Neville Sinclair.

What makes The Rocketeer stand out from other superhero films is its attention to detail and world-building. The film captures the nostalgic feel of 1930s Hollywood, complete with art deco sets, period costumes, and classic jazz music. The Rocketeer himself is a throwback to pulp heroes like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, with a sleek helmet, leather jacket, and rocket-powered backpack that never fails to impress.

Overall, The Rocketeer is a fun and thrilling adventure that captures the magic of classic superhero storytelling. It's a shame that the film didn't do well at the box office, as it had the potential to become a beloved franchise. However, it has since gained a cult following and remains a beloved example of '90s cinema.

The Rocketeer is a 1991 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 61.
