"The Serpent's Egg" is a dramatic film produced between the United States and Western Germany. The film takes place during the 1920s, with Abel as an American Jew living in Berlin. The combination of little money and exorbitant prices for anything and everything have decimated Germany's economy and has forced Abel to live with Manuela, his sister-in-law who works as a woman of the night and at a cabaret. Merely a week after the death of his brother, Abel decides to take a job from Prof. Hans Vergerus.

"The Serpent's Egg" marks the only Hollywood entry within Ingmar Bergman's filmography.
