In The Shaggy Dog, we meet Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk), a teenager who is obsessed with a local television show featuring a magician named Biff Buzzard (played by Fred MacMurray). One day, Wilby comes across a mysterious ring in a local museum that seems to have a strange effect on him. Soon after, he discovers that he has the ability to turn into a shaggy sheepdog at will.

Wilby's transformation becomes a source of both amusement and trouble as he tries to hide his secret from his family and friends. His father, Wilson Daniels (played by Roberta Shore), is running for district attorney, and Wilby's antics threaten to ruin his chances of winning the election. Meanwhile, a group of spies led by a man named Alonzo P. Hawk (played by Keenan Wynn) are after the ring that gave Wilby his powers.

As Wilby struggles to keep his secret safe, he learns that being a dog isn't just about playing fetch and getting belly rubs. He has to contend with dangerous situations and protect his loved ones from harm. Along the way, he discovers that there are other people in his life who are not what they seem, and that he will need all of his wit and courage to save the day.

The Shaggy Dog is a family-friendly comedy that is full of slapstick humor and whimsy. Tommy Kirk is a delight as Wilby, bringing a wide-eyed innocence to the role that makes his transformation all the more amusing. Fred MacMurray is his usual charming self as Biff Buzzard, the magician who may have more up his sleeve than meets the eye. Jean Hagen is a standout as Wilson's wife, Katie, whose no-nonsense attitude provides a nice contrast to the zaniness around her.

The movie also features a catchy theme song, "The Shaggy Dog" sung by Annette Funicello, which is sure to stick in your head long after the credits have rolled.

Despite its age, The Shaggy Dog is still enjoyable today, thanks in part to its timeless humor and appealing cast. It may not have the high-tech special effects of modern films, but its low-tech charm is part of what makes it so endearing. It's a movie that will make you laugh, and maybe even inspire you to spend a little more time playing with your furry friends.

The Shaggy Dog is a 1959 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 45.
