In 1993, Stephen King's chilling novel The Tommyknockers was adapted into a made-for-TV movie starring Jimmy Smits, Marg Helgenberger, and John Ashton. The story revolves around a small town in Maine, Haven, where strange and eerie events begin to occur after a mysterious object is unearthed by the protagonist, Bobbi Anderson. Anderson, played by Helgenberger, is a writer who lives alone in a cabin outside of Haven. One day while taking her dog for a walk in the woods, she stumbles upon a metal object jutting out of the ground, which she quickly becomes obsessed with digging up. As she uncovers more and more of the object, she begins to experience strange visions and sensations, and her behavior becomes erratic and dangerous.

Meanwhile, Bobbi's best friend, Jim Gardener (Smits), a recovering alcoholic and former poet, returns to Haven after a long absence. He is shocked by her appearance and strange behavior, as well as the other bizarre occurrences happening in the town. Strange lights are seen in the sky, animals are behaving strangely, and people are disappearing.

As more and more of the townspeople become affected by the unearthly power emanating from the object, Jim and Bobbi must race against time to uncover the truth behind its origins and prevent its destructive power from consuming the entire town.

Throughout the course of the movie, we see both Bobbi and Jim struggle with their own personal demons, as well as the mounting horror and chaos that the Tommyknockers bring upon Haven. Marg Helgenberger delivers a haunting and powerful performance as Bobbi, depicting the character's descent into madness and her eventual redemption with great skill. Jimmy Smits also gives a strong performance as Jim, portraying the character's emotional journey with sensitivity and depth.

While some may criticize the film for its lower production values compared to modern horror movies, The Tommyknockers is an effective and terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's novel that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers. With its tense atmosphere, complex characters, and eerie story, this classic horror film is still worth watching today.
