The World's Greatest Lover is a comedy film that was released in 1977. Directed by and starring Gene Wilder, it also features Carol Kane and Dom DeLuise. The film is set in the 1920s and follows Rudy Hickman, a nerdy aspiring actor who dreams of becoming a great lover and movie star. Rudy is married to a domineering and unsupportive wife, Annie (played by Kane), who works as a seamstress to support them both. Despite her lack of faith in him, Rudy continues to pursue his dreams and eventually lands a bit role in a Hollywood film. However, his performance on set is disastrous and he is fired, leading him to return home defeated.

Desperate for a break, Rudy decides to enter a screen-test contest held by a mysterious movie mogul. The winner of the contest will receive a contract for a leading role in a major motion picture. In order to stand out from the competition, Rudy decides to create a new persona for himself - that of the world's greatest lover.

Rudy turns to his eccentric landlord, Clive (played by DeLuise), for help in his transformation. Clive serves as Rudy's coach, teaching him various ways to woo women and improve his physical appearance. As Rudy starts to become more confident with his new persona, he finds himself becoming more successful with women both on and off the screen.

However, things start to spiral out of control as the competition heats up and Rudy's two personas - the insecure actor and the confident lover - begin to clash. As the pressure builds, Rudy must find a way to balance his two identities and win the contest without losing himself in the process.

The film is a light-hearted and entertaining look at the Hollywood film industry in the early part of the 20th century. The chemistry between Wilder, Kane, and DeLuise is fantastic, with each actor delivering memorable and humorous performances. The costumes and set designs are also impressive, accurately capturing the glamour and decadence of the era.

Ultimately, The World's Greatest Lover is a charming and funny film that showcases Wilder's talents both as a director and an actor. Though it may not be as well-known as some of his other works, it is definitely worth a watch for fans of classic comedies.
