In the movie Three Lives and Only One Death, directed by Raoul Ruiz, Marcello Mastroianni plays Mateo Strano, a wealthy man who seems to have everything a person could want. However, despite his wealth and success, Mateo is not satisfied with his life and is haunted by feelings of boredom and emptiness. The film is divided into four segments, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Mateo's life. In the first segment, we see Mateo as a business tycoon who is trying to buy a building that is owned by a stubborn old man. Mateo uses all of his powers of persuasion to try to win the old man over, but he fails miserably.

In the second segment, we see Mateo as a husband and father. His son is getting married, and Mateo is determined to make the wedding a grand affair. However, as the wedding day approaches, Mateo begins to have doubts about his own marriage and his relationship with his family. He feels disconnected from them and struggles to understand why.

The third segment of the movie focuses on Mateo's romantic relationships. He has two lovers: a young woman named Cecilia (played by Anna Galiena) and an older woman named Helene (played by Marisa Paredes). Mateo is torn between the two women and can't decide which one he truly loves. At the same time, he is also struggling with his own mortality and the fear of growing old.

The final segment of the film is perhaps the most surreal and dreamlike. Mateo finds himself trapped in a strange and labyrinthine building, unable to escape. He encounters a number of eccentric characters along the way, including a man who claims to be his double. As Mateo tries to find his way out of the building, he discovers some shocking truths about himself and his life.

Throughout the movie, Marcello Mastroianni delivers a powerful performance as Mateo, capturing the character's complex mix of arrogance, vulnerability, and despair. The rest of the cast is equally strong, particularly Anna Galiena as the seductive Cecilia and Marisa Paredes as the world-weary Helene.

Director Raoul Ruiz imbues Three Lives and Only One Death with a sense of mystery and ambiguity, keeping the viewer guessing about what is truly going on in Mateo's life. At times, the film feels like a surreal dream, with strange and inexplicable events unfolding on screen. However, underneath the film's strangeness lies a deep exploration of the human condition and the search for meaning in a world that often seems chaotic and meaningless.

Overall, Three Lives and Only One Death is a thought-provoking and engrossing film that will leave viewers contemplating the mysteries of life long after the credits have rolled.
