Underneath is a Crime Drama movie that was released in 1995, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The movie features Peter Gallagher, Elisabeth Shue, and Alison Elliott, who are the leading actors. Underneath revolves around Michael Chambers (Peter Gallagher), who returns to his hometown, Texas, after being away for eight years. He returns with the goal of reconnecting with Rachel, his old girlfriend (Alison Elliott). Suddenly, things start getting complicated when Chambers gets back home, and he discovers that Rachel, now married to Tommy Dundee (William Fichtner), has a child and is entangled in a plot with some ambitious criminal.

Before Chambers left town eight years ago, he was involved in big-time gambling, and he owed Tommy Dundee some money. In the span of eight years, Chambers has managed to get his act together, but upon his return, Dundee sees an opportunity to get his money back. In the process, it is revealed that Dundee is involved in a scheme that includes bank robbery intending to pull off the biggest heist in the town's history.

Chambers feels obligated towards Rachel, who is unhappy in her marriage to Dundee and wants to leave him, but fears for her life, especially with Dundee’s theft plan. Hence, Chambers goes back to his old ways and gets involved in Dundee’s heist to protect Rachel. Along the way, Chambers discovers that he has been set up by someone he had trusted and put the lives of him and his loved ones in peril.

The movie is a tense and character-driven film that explores the complexities of human relationships and how past mistakes can affect one's present. Peter Gallagher portrays the lead character, Michael Chambers, with effortless ease, and the depiction of his vulnerabilities, desires, fears, and choices make him so relatable. The chemistry between Gallagher and Alison Elliott, who portrays Rachel, is palpable, and their relationship has undertones of sadness, regret and missed opportunity which adds depth and elevates the movie.

Elisabeth Shue plays Chambers’s former love interest, who has moved on and is now a married woman with a child. Still, as we see her interactions with Chambers, we can sense that the spark between them has not entirely faded away.

The movie's soundtrack, composed by Cliff Martinez, enhances the film's overall atmosphere by combining contemporary instruments with electronic beats, thereby creating a gritty and suspenseful atmosphere to complement the story unfolding on screen. The editing of the film is also noteworthy and adds to the sense of urgency and tension as the story hurtles towards its climax.

Underneath is a gripping movie that explores themes of crime, deceit, love, redemption, and loyalty without resorting to clichés or stereotypes. The movie keeps the viewers guessing and on the edge of their seats as the twists and turns of the plot unfold. The characters are well-drawn, and the dialogues are sharp and concise.
